Abstract

This article analyzes the major socio-political events that occurred in recent democratic governments in the seventies in Argentina and Chile: The third Peronist government and the Popular Unity government, respectively. The hypothesis that aims to develop the study shows the Huntington postulates that consider authoritarianism in Latin America as a response to the failure of democratic institutions to contain social and political mobilization. It argues, in particular, the possibility of a common pattern analysis both with respect to the exponential growth of the power of the conservative elements and authoritarianism as an idea and political practice within the Governments and their associated agents. For purposes of study, we use a benchmarking scheme that is structured according to the method of the most similar systems research, whose objectives are the dynamics and configuration of political systems, focusing on the process of government and the system party. We conclude with a discussion of the main differences arising crossing the comparative information on the Argentine case and the rightward path, and the Chilean and the polarization of the party system.
